HUNTSVILLE — A $34 million road project has reached a major milestone in north Huntsville, opening the Memorial Parkway overpass at Mastin Lake Road and extending uninterrupted travel through the city to more than 10 miles.

City and state leaders celebrated the opening with an October 16 ribbon-cutting, marking progress on a transportation corridor that local officials say must keep pace with new homes, retail development and the daily needs of residents.

The mainline and overpass opened to traffic in both directions on October 15, according to the Alabama Department of Transportation. Work beneath the bridge and final paving remained unfinished, making the opening an important milestone rather than the end of every construction activity.

“Completing the Memorial Parkway overpass at Mastin Lake Road is a major win for Huntsville’s transportation infrastructure,” Mayor Tommy Battle said in the city’s announcement.

“Drivers can now travel Memorial Parkway for more than 10 miles through the heart of the city with no traffic signals and no intersections, which enhances the flow of traffic and helps everyone get to their destination safely.”

For District 1 Council Member Michelle Watkins, the project’s significance reaches into the neighborhoods and businesses surrounding the roadway.

“What does this overpass mean for north Huntsville?” Watkins said. “In short, it means a lot. This area is growing with a recent surge in new home construction and lots more on the way.”

Watkins also pointed to commercial activity as part of the area’s changing transportation needs.

“New retail developments have already happened and even more will be happening soon,” she said. “And it’s a significant quality-of-life improvement not only for residents but for visitors as well.”

State Sen. Sam Givhan and state Reps. Laura Hall and Rex Reynolds joined Watkins at the ceremony, according to the city. The event brought together Huntsville, ALDOT and representatives of Gov. Kay Ivey’s office.

Rogers Group Inc. began construction in June 2023. The project expanded the US-231/US-431 corridor with a limited-access mainline and frontage roads, while the overpass carries six lanes across Mastin Lake Road. Improvements also extend north toward Winchester Road.

“For Huntsville drivers, the three-year wait for quicker travel through Memorial Parkway is finally over,” Ivey said in her October 15 announcement.

The work is part of Restore Our Roads, the city-state partnership behind several Huntsville transportation improvements. Other projects have included Memorial Parkway overpasses and access roads in south Huntsville, the widening of Cecil Ashburn Drive and the Northern Bypass, State Route 255.

Battle credited that partnership for delivering the Mastin Lake project and said the city looks forward to future work with ALDOT.

Drivers, however, should distinguish traveling over Mastin Lake Road from accessing the intersection below it. In its October 15 advisory, ALDOT said through movements on Mastin Lake Road and left turns beneath the bridge remained temporarily closed.

The agency anticipated reopening that intersection later in October. The city’s October 16 announcement said work beneath the overpass was expected to be finished before Thanksgiving. Those statements describe anticipated schedules, not confirmation that the remaining work is complete.

ALDOT also warned about temporary lane closures and uneven pavement as crews connect mainline, ramp and frontage-road surfaces. Motorists can check current conditions through ALGO Traffic.

For north Huntsville, the overpass provides a new stage in a long-running transportation investment. The next milestone will be completing the surrounding work so residents can use both the expressway and the local connections beneath it.
