HUNTSVILLE — Dr. Charlotte C. Teague, chair of Alabama A&M University’s Department of English and Modern Languages, has earned national fellowships to strengthen leadership, humanities education, and student writing opportunities.
For 2026-27, Teague was selected for the HERS Leadership Institute, Rutgers University’s inaugural Minority-Serving Institution Humanities Leadership Academy Fellowship and the Association of Writers & Writing Programs HBCU Faculty Fellowship. She separately secured a $10,000 Mellon Leadership Fellowship.
The Hillsboro native, two-time AAMU alumna and second-generation Bulldog has served the university for more than two decades. She also directs its Dual Enrollment and Early College initiatives.
According to HERS, Teague is AAMU’s first participant in its leadership institute. She is also the university’s first AWP HBCU Faculty Fellow and one of three faculty members selected for that cohort.
The AWP fellowship includes a $4,000 honorarium and conference support. Fellows will mentor student writers through monthly workshops, with students presenting nationally and publishing their work.
“Our students have stories and ideas that deserve serious intellectual attention,” Teague said, emphasizing her commitment to expanding opportunities beyond the classroom.
