Huntsville International Airport has launched the first phase of its West Aviation development with $2 million in federal funding for initial land and infrastructure work.
Airport and regional leaders marked the project’s ceremonial start on Sept. 24. The funding came through the fiscal 2026 federal transportation and housing appropriations law and will support development west of the airport’s West Runway, according to the Huntsville Business Journal.
The first phase prepares land for potential aviation businesses. Airport officials hope to recruit companies that maintain, repair, and overhaul aircraft. Longer-range plans envision hangar space and a ramp providing direct taxiway access, similar in concept to facilities serving the airport’s east-side cargo complex. The $2 million funds the initial phase; it is not the stated cost of completing the entire development.
Airport CEO Butch Roberts said the work aligns with the city’s planned relocation of County Line Road and could help attract aircraft maintenance operations and skilled jobs. U.S. Rep. Dale Strong linked the investment to the region’s aerospace and defense supply chains. Those jobs remain a development goal rather than a reported hiring commitment.
For North Alabama, the project connects transportation policy with economic development: preparing airport land may make it easier to compete for future aviation tenants. Key measures will be infrastructure completion, the businesses that commit to the site, and the number of jobs they ultimately create.
