Alabama A&M University Associate Professor of Mathematics Dr. Yinshu Wu is exploring how quantum computing and applied mathematics could improve the way spacecraft are moved and managed in orbit.
Wu presented her research, “Quantum Optimization Algorithms for ODE-Based Orbital Maneuver Planning,” during a recent engagement between AAMU researchers and U.S. Space Command officials.
Her work combines differential equations, optimization methods and emerging quantum-computing techniques to study complex orbital maneuver decisions. Potential applications include collision avoidance, orbital transfers, satellite coordination and space traffic management.
“These are high-dimensional optimization problems with operational importance,” Wu said.
Wu, who coordinates AAMU’s Mathematics Program, has served on the University faculty for 15 years. Her expertise includes mathematical modeling, artificial intelligence, machine learning, quantum computing and optimization.
The research also creates opportunities for AAMU students to participate in interdisciplinary work connected to space, defense and advanced computing.
As U.S. Space Command expands its presence at Redstone Arsenal, Wu’s research highlights AAMU’s potential role in future space-related research, workforce development and collaborative technology initiatives.
