HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Big Spring Park East’s transformation is becoming more visible as structural steel rises for the pavilion that will anchor the park expansion.
Construction began earlier this year on 2.4 acres between Church Street and Fountain Circle, where the former City Hall stood. Crews initially concentrated on site preparation, underground infrastructure and foundations. The emerging pavilion now provides the public a clearer view of the project’s scale and design.
City General Services Director Ricky Wilkinson said the earlier horizontal work made progress difficult to recognize, but vertical construction will allow residents to see the park taking shape.
Other improvements include an underground electrical vault, reconstruction along Church Street and a raised crosswalk connecting the park’s eastern and western sections. Landscaping is expected to be installed in the new Church Street median this fall.
Once completed, the expansion will include three terraced plaza levels, public restrooms, nature-inspired playground features, and a pavilion topped by a vegetative roof. Plans also call for public art, enhanced landscaping, and gathering areas for community activities.
Accessibility is a major component. Two new routes will connect Church Street with Fountain Circle: a paved switchback path along the park’s south side and a meandering sidewalk leading to the plaza levels. The connections are intended to eliminate the need for wheelchair users to travel around the block.
Additional work will include the pavilion’s timber frame, plaza construction, landscaping and art installations. Wilkinson described the expansion as a significant community asset that will create more opportunities for residents and visitors to experience downtown Huntsville.
The city now projects the Big Spring Park East expansion will be completed in spring 2027.
