The 2025 marching band season may be over, but the debate is just getting started.
As HBCU football teams prepare to kick off the 2026 season, fans across the country are already asking one question: Who has the best marching band in Black college football? While championships are won on the gridiron, many alumni will tell you that the real competition begins when the clock strikes halftime.
Every year, the Band of the Year (BOTY) National Championship Rankings recognize the nation’s top HBCU marching bands based on musicality, percussion, drill and design, drum majors, auxiliary units, and overall performance.

1. North Carolina A&T State University — Blue & Gold Marching Machine
2. Southern University — Human Jukebox
3. Florida A&M University — Marching 100
4. Norfolk State University — Spartan Legion
5. Texas Southern University — Ocean of Soul
6. Prairie View A&M University — Marching Storm
7. Alabama State University — Mighty Marching Hornets
8. Hampton University — The Marching Force
9. Alabama A&M University — Maroon & White Marching Band
10. Grambling State University — World Famed Tiger Marching Band
Those rankings are now history, and every band begins the 2026 season with a new opportunity to impress judges and fans. As stadium lights come on this fall, thousands will be watching to see which program delivers the most unforgettable halftime performance.
Will North Carolina A&T defend its crown? Can Southern or Florida A&M climb to the top? Will another powerhouse emerge?
One thing is certain: the battle for halftime supremacy is back, and every Saturday will add another chapter to one of HBCU football’s greatest traditions.
