As Huntsville prepares for its Aug. 25 Municipal Election, one city leader is working behind the scenes to help ensure every eligible voter has the opportunity to make their voice heard.
As City Clerk and Election Manager, Shaundrika Edwards oversees one of the city’s most important civic responsibilities—administering local elections fairly, accurately, and efficiently. With the voter registration deadline quickly approaching on Monday, Aug. 10, Edwards is encouraging residents not to wait until the last minute to register and make a voting plan.
On Tuesday, Aug. 25, voters will elect representatives for Huntsville City Council Districts 2, 3, and 4, along with Huntsville City Schools Board of Education Districts 2 and 3. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
For those unable to vote in person, absentee voting is already underway. Applications for absentee ballots by mail must be submitted by Aug. 18, while in-person absentee ballot applications are due Aug. 20. Emergency absentee ballot applications will be accepted through Aug. 24. Mailed absentee ballots must be postmarked by Aug. 24 and received by noon on Election Day to be counted.

Edwards understands the importance of public service. A native of Montgomery, Alabama, she moved to Huntsville more than 20 years ago to attend college and decided to make the Rocket City her home. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Alabama in Huntsville and later completed a Master of Science in Human Resource Management from Troy University.
Throughout her career, Edwards has built a reputation for leadership, organizational excellence, and community engagement. She was recognized as a Rising Star by Systems, Products, and Solutions in 2012, led process improvement initiatives at PPG Aerospace, and was selected for the City of Huntsville Mayor’s Leadership Program in 2019. During more than a decade of service in government, manufacturing, and the private sector, she has been known for strengthening operations while fostering positive relationships with employees and the public alike.
Outside City Hall, Edwards treasures time with her husband of 14 years, Coach Tremaine Edwards, and their daughters, Makenzie and Laiyah. She believes maintaining a healthy work-life balance is just as important as serving the community.
As Election Day approaches, Edwards hopes Huntsville residents will take advantage of their opportunity to participate in local government by registering before the Aug. 10 deadline and casting their ballots. After all, local elections often have the greatest impact on everyday life—and every vote helps shape the future of Huntsville.
