Gospel music icon Marvin Sapp is generating both excitement and controversy after announcing a new distribution partnership with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Distribution for his upcoming album, “Restoration,” and its lead single, “He’s Not Finished.”
The agreement marks Roc Nation Distribution’s first full-length gospel music release, a milestone Sapp says is built on shared purpose and mutual respect. The award-winning singer and pastor said the partnership represents an opportunity to reach listeners while entering a new chapter in his decades-long career.
Not everyone is celebrating the announcement. Some Christians have criticized the collaboration on social media, questioning whether a gospel artist should align with a company founded by hip-hop mogul Jay-Z. Others defended Sapp, arguing that distributing gospel music through a major label does not change the message of the music.
The debate has also reminded fans that gospel and mainstream music have crossed paths for years. Kirk Franklin has collaborated with artists including Salt, Lil Baby, Will Smith and GloRilla. Mary Mary has worked with MC Lyte and Snoop Dogg, while artists such as Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Tye Tribbett, Kim Burrell and The Clark Sisters have also partnered with performers outside traditional gospel circles.
Whether celebrated or criticized, Sapp’s latest move has reignited conversations about how gospel music can reach new audiences while remaining true to its spiritual mission.
