Actor Idris Elba has partnered with Google to provide artificial intelligence tools to nearly 100,000 creators across five African nations, helping artists, filmmakers and entrepreneurs overcome financial barriers and expand opportunities in the digital economy.

Award-winning actor and filmmaker Idris Elba is teaming up with Google to help reshape Africa’s creative economy by expanding access to artificial intelligence tools for nearly 100,000 creators across five countries.

The initiative includes an investment of nearly $1 million to provide Google’s Gemini AI assistant and other AI-powered resources to artists, filmmakers, musicians, writers and entrepreneurs in Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, Kenya and Sierra Leone.

Organizers say the program is designed to remove financial barriers that often prevent emerging creatives from producing high-quality digital content. By giving participants access to advanced AI technology, the initiative aims to help creators develop films, marketing campaigns, visual art and other media projects without the high costs typically associated with professional production.

James Manyika, Google’s senior vice president for research and technology, said artificial intelligence has the potential to level the playing field for talented individuals who lack access to major studio budgets.

“We think about all those creatives who don’t have access to these enormous studio budgets,” Manyika said. “AI is potentially a tool that can enable them to do work that they couldn’t otherwise do.”

Elba said the partnership is about unlocking opportunities for Africa’s growing creative sector by ensuring talented individuals have access to the tools needed to compete on a global stage.

“The barrier is not a lack of vision—it’s a lack of access. Talent is everywhere; opportunity is not,” Elba said.

The initiative reflects the growing role artificial intelligence is expected to play in expanding economic opportunities and supporting innovation throughout Africa’s rapidly evolving creative industries.
