Artificial intelligence is becoming a powerful new tool in the hiring process as more employers use AI-powered software to examine job applicants’ public online activity before making hiring decisions, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Companies are increasingly turning to automated screening platforms that can quickly review years of publicly available content from social media accounts, online forums, blogs, and other digital sources. Unlike traditional background checks, AI can rapidly identify posts, comments, or online behavior that employers believe could affect workplace culture or a company’s public image.
The trend reflects businesses’ growing investment in AI-driven hiring technology, even as federal regulators continue raising concerns about privacy, transparency, and potential discrimination. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has reminded employers that AI hiring tools must comply with federal anti-discrimination laws, while the Federal Trade Commission has warned against unfair or deceptive uses of automated employment decisions.
Some background screening companies now use facial recognition and data-matching technology to connect online accounts that applicants may have believed were anonymous.
Workplace experts say deleting a social media presence altogether may not always help. Instead, they recommend maintaining a professional digital reputation, reviewing privacy settings regularly, and remembering that anything posted publicly could become part of a future job interview.
As artificial intelligence becomes more deeply integrated into recruiting, experts say job seekers should think of their online presence as an extension of their résumé. In today’s job market, what employers find online may be just as important as what appears on a job application.
