AIKEN, S.C. — Authorities in South Carolina say they have identified the remains of a missing 4-year-old girl after an investigation uncovered evidence of severe child abuse and an alleged attempt to conceal her death.
The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that DNA testing identified human remains recovered from Cedar Creek Reservoir, also known as Stumpy Pond, as those of Javeayah Harris.
According to Sheriff Marty Sawyer, investigators believe Javeayah suffered a fatal head injury caused by abuse and was never taken for medical treatment. Authorities allege that after her death, her parents attempted to destroy and conceal her remains using corrosive chemicals before disposing of them in the reservoir.
Javeayah’s parents, Michilae Herring and Johmarea Harris, were previously charged with homicide by child abuse. Prosecutors have since added charges of destroying and desecrating human remains as investigators uncovered additional evidence. A judge denied bond for both defendants, citing concerns they could flee.
Sheriff Sawyer described the case as one of the most heartbreaking investigations his office has ever handled. Because of the condition of the remains, authorities say it is unlikely every portion of Javeayah’s body will be recovered.
Investigators also searched the family’s home and nearby wooded areas for additional evidence connected to the case. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
During a news conference, members of the sheriff’s office wore pink ribbons and ties in memory of Javeayah, honoring her favorite color while pledging to seek justice on her behalf.
