SPEAKIN’ OUT NEWS

HUNTSVILLE — As Huntsville continues to rank among Alabama’s fastest-growing cities, the Huntsville City Council has approved zoning changes designed to accommodate new businesses, expand housing opportunities, and support long-term economic development.
During its June 25 meeting, the council approved ordinances rezoning newly annexed property along Winchester Road for commercial use and nearly 47.2 acres in western Huntsville for future residential development.
One ordinance rezones approximately 1.33 acres on the north side of Winchester Road, west of Shields Road, from unzoned property to Highway Business (C-4). The designation allows commercial uses including restaurants, retail stores, offices, medical clinics, banks, hotels, and service businesses.
The commercial rezoning comes as Huntsville continues investing in improvements along the Winchester Road corridor to accommodate growing traffic generated by new neighborhoods and businesses.
The council also approved rezoning approximately 47.19 acres south of Swancott Road and east of Rabbit Lane from Residence 1-B to Residence 2, creating additional opportunities for residential development in western Huntsville. The action follows earlier annexations and infrastructure planning in the area, supporting continued expansion toward Limestone County.
Planning officials say these zoning decisions help coordinate roads, utilities, schools, emergency services, and other public infrastructure as development continues.
The City Council also approved a technical ordinance correcting section numbering in the city’s code governing access to city-owned, controlled, and leased property. The correction does not change the ordinance’s intent or enforcement.
Mayor Tommy Battle approved the ordinances after their adoption by the council led by Council President Jennie Robinson.
Together, the zoning decisions position Huntsville for continued commercial investment, residential growth, and long-term economic development.
