Former Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum was arrested in Daphne on July 2 on drug-related charges following a traffic stop. Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing.

DAPHNE, Ala. — Former Florida Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum was arrested in Baldwin County on multiple drug-related charges after police stopped him for allegedly driving erratically, authorities said.

According to the Daphne Police Department, Gillum, 46, was taken into custody on July 2 and charged with possession of dangerous drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, and second-degree possession of marijuana. Jail records show he was booked into the Baldwin County Jail later that evening and released the following day.

Police Chief Brian Gulsby said officers initiated the traffic stop near North Main Street after observing erratic driving. During the stop, an officer reportedly spotted a glass pipe in plain view on the vehicle’s center console, leading to a probable cause search. Investigators said they recovered several marijuana cigarettes and three packages containing a substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine.

Gillum rose to national prominence in 2018 when he became the Democratic nominee for governor of Florida, narrowly losing to Ron DeSantis by fewer than 34,000 votes after a statewide recount.

The arrest marks the latest legal challenge for Gillum. In 2020, he entered a rehabilitation program following a highly publicized incident at a Miami Beach hotel. Two years later, he faced federal corruption charges but was acquitted of making false statements to the FBI, while prosecutors later dismissed the remaining counts after a jury failed to reach a verdict.

The Baldwin County case remains pending.
