Montgomery’s Therapeutic Recreation Center (TRC) officially reopens today, April 20, 2026, following a $5 million renovation of its permanent facility. The TRC has served residents with disabilities since the 1970s, offering adaptive sports, arts, life skills programming, and community building for Montgomery families.
The newly upgraded building is designed to expand programming capacity, improve accessibility, and provide a welcoming, modern space for children, teens, and adults with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities. The city’s Parks and Recreation Department said the TRC remained in temporary quarters throughout the renovation so services could continue without interruption.
Mayor Steven Reed said renovating the facility was a priority because of the people it serves. For many families in Montgomery, the TRC is more than a recreation hub — it is a lifeline, a community, and one of the few dedicated spaces built specifically for their loved ones.
Advocates have long pushed for greater investment in accessible public spaces across Alabama. In a state where disability services are often stretched thin, the TRC stands out as a city-funded, community-centered model of inclusion. The reopening is a visible reminder that equity includes ensuring everyone — regardless of ability — has a place to play, learn, and belong.
Speakin’ Out News encourages Montgomery-area families to tour the upgraded space, sign up for programs, and celebrate an investment that sends a clear message: every resident counts. Community members interested in volunteering, mentoring, sponsoring programs, or donating equipment are urged to contact the Montgomery Parks and Recreation Department and help keep the TRC thriving for decades to come.
