LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. — What started as a routine drive turned into an unusual and messy situation on Interstate 65 last week, after a crash left spicy chicken wings scattered across the roadway.
According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) and the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), the incident occurred near mile marker 58 outside Athens. One of the trucks involved was carrying a load of chicken wings, which spilled across the southbound lanes, creating hazardous driving conditions and a lengthy cleanup effort.
At the height of the incident, the right southbound lane was closed as crews worked to remove debris, while at least one lane remained open to keep traffic moving. Drivers traveling through the area were urged to slow down and use caution as emergency responders and cleanup crews worked to restore safe
conditions.
The unexpected spill caused delays for several hours, impacting commuters and travelers along one of North Alabama’s busiest corridors. Troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division remained on the scene to monitor traffic and assist with safety efforts.
While the situation may have seemed unusual, officials emphasized the importance of staying alert and patient during roadway incidents, especially when unexpected hazards are involved.
Subsequent reports confirmed that the roadway has since been cleared and all lanes have reopened, with traffic returning to normal.
No additional details regarding injuries or the cause of the crash have been released.
