“A Mother’s Cry for Justice”: 19-Year-Old Killed While Working at Amazon in Bessemer

Tyler Neil Alexander, 19, is remembered by his family as a loving son and hardworking young man whose life was cut short.

A Birmingham mother is demanding answers after her only son was fatally shot while on the job at an Amazon warehouse in Bessemer.

Tyler Neil Alexander, 19, a 2025 graduate of Huffman High School, was on break Sunday night when gunfire erupted in the parking lot of the Amazon Fulfillment Center on Powder Plant Road around 10:40 p.m. When the shooting ended, Tyler was dead.

“He was a good one,” said his mother, Sophie Brown. “I need to find out who killed my son while he was being a productive citizen.”

Bessemer police placed multiple evidence markers across the parking lot as investigators worked the scene. Amazon canceled the remainder of the night shift and Monday’s day shift, sending employees home with pay. The company issued condolences and offered counseling services.

Brown said she had set her alarm to prepare food for her son when he got off work, a routine she followed after each shift. Instead, she was awakened by a phone call from her daughter.

“I knew something was wrong,” Brown said.

She rushed to the warehouse but was stopped by security and later told she could not see her son. A coroner eventually showed her a photo to confirm his identity.

Police say no arrests have been made, and it is unclear whether the shooter or shooters were Amazon employees.

Tyler had recently enrolled at Lawson State Community College and had worked previously at Taco Bell, where he became a shift leader at just 18. He had only been at Amazon for about 20 days but was proud of the job.

“He told me, ‘Mama, I’m already important,’” Brown said.

Described as kind, outgoing, and loving, Tyler is remembered for his generosity and bright smile. Brown is now calling for justice and improved security at the facility.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Bessemer Police or Crime Stoppers.
