NEWS RELEASE

Retired Teachers’ Day is Tuesday, November 18, 2025. The Madison County Education Retirees Association (MCERA) joins other associations in the state by acknowledging the contributions of its retirees.
Recognizing the contributions of retired educators, the Alabama Legislature passed Act No. 90-183 to honor Alabama’s education retirees. The joint resolution designates Tuesday of American Education Week each year to recognize the state’s retired education personnel.
The MCERA is one of more than 75 local units of the Alabama Education Retirees Association, Inc. (AERA), which represents more than 20,000 retired educators.
“Everyone’s life has been enriched by a retired educator,” stated Otis Threatt, Sr., President of the MCERA.
“Even in our retirement years, MCERA retired educators continue to touch the lives of those around us by supporting and volunteering in our schools, church projects, New Futures, Diversicare of Big Springs, and more,” stated Otis Threatt, Sr., President of the MCERA. In 2024, our members volunteered 5,546 service hours in Madison County.
MCERA members will hold their annual E.H. Wilbourn Scholarship Auction on December 4, 2025, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Huntsville, Alabama. Proceeds from the auction will fund a four-year scholarship for one student who attends college to become a teacher.
“All citizens are encouraged to join together in paying tribute to the retired educators of Madison County,” stated Threatt.
