Alabama State is holding its breath as star quarterback Andrew Body undergoes testing for a shoulder injury sustained in the Hornets’ 31–28 win over Prairie View A&M on Saturday.
The dual-threat junior, who has powered Alabama State’s offense all season, went down after scoring on a second-quarter rushing touchdown. Head coach Eddie Robinson Jr. confirmed Monday that Body’s status is still uncertain pending imaging and medical evaluation.
“He’ll have to go get the imaging today,” Robinson said. “We’re hopeful it’s a rehab-able injury and that he might still return this year.”
Body has been one of the SWAC’s most dynamic quarterbacks this season, leading the conference with 2,112 passing yards and 24 touchdowns, while also ranking third in rushing with 708 yards. After missing nearly all of last season with a shoulder injury, his comeback had been one of the biggest storylines in the league.
Now, the Hornets may have to pivot — again.
Next Man Up: Te’Sean Smoot
With Body sidelined, backup quarterback Te’Sean Smoot, a transfer from Jacksonville State and native of Ohio, is preparing to take command of the Hornets’ offense.
“Te’Sean came here to compete for the starting job, and he’s been right there with Andrew all offseason,” Robinson said. “He’s ready to step in if needed.”
Smoot finished Saturday’s game against Prairie View completing 4 of 9 passes for 44 yards, helping the Hornets hold on for a narrow win.
If Body is out for an extended period, Alabama State’s SWAC East title hopes could hinge on Smoot’s ability to lead under pressure. The Hornets remain in the mix — but with the schedule tightening, every snap counts.
