Upgrades enhance passenger experience and prepare HSV for record-breaking travel demand

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Travelers passing through Huntsville International Airport (HSV) are already noticing big changes as part of a sweeping $14 million concourse modernization project aimed at improving comfort, efficiency, and accessibility for passengers.
The renovations — recently completed by Alabama-based contractor Robins & Morton — mark the airport’s most significant infrastructure upgrade in more than a decade. Airport leaders say the project reflects Huntsville’s continued growth as both a technology hub and regional travel center.
Major Improvements for Travelers
The upgrades include:
- A second elevator and additional escalators to ease congestion and improve accessibility for passengers with mobility needs.
 - Two new stairwells providing additional routes between concourse levels.
 - A completely redesigned exit area with three post-security corridors and updated breach-control doors to streamline movement from gates to the lobby.
 - Replacement of all existing escalators and elevators to increase reliability.
 - A previously completed $5.7 million restroom renovation, which added family restrooms and a dedicated lactation room.

“These renovations represent our ongoing commitment to making HSV one of the most traveler-friendly airports in the Southeast,” said Butch Roberts, CEO of the Huntsville-Madison County Airport Authority. “Passengers will immediately notice smoother flow, easier navigation, and an improved experience overall.”
Growth Driving the Changes
The improvements come as Huntsville International continues to experience record-setting growth. In 2024, HSV served more than 1.7 million passengers — a 15% increase from pre-pandemic levels — with expanded routes and new airline partnerships fueling the surge.
“With increased traffic, this investment ensures we remain ready for the future,” Roberts said. “We’re enhancing both capacity and convenience.”
Building for the Future
The concourse project is part of a broader modernization plan that includes expanded parking facilities, updated food and retail options, and future technology upgrades to improve check-in and baggage services.
Robins & Morton officials said the renovations were completed with minimal disruption to flights and passengers.
“These improvements not only elevate the airport’s appearance but also its functionality,” said project director Tom Miller. “It’s a reflection of Huntsville’s progress as a city that values smart growth and innovation.”
