MOBILE, Ala. — The race for Mobile’s next mayor gained national attention this week as U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) endorsed State Representative Barbara Drummond, praising her as the most qualified candidate to lead the Port City.
Booker, a former mayor of Newark, said Drummond’s decades of public service uniquely prepare her for the role. “Barbara Drummond is the only candidate with experience at the city, county, and state levels,” he said. “She has managed multi-million-dollar budgets, passed laws in Montgomery, and understands how to get things done for Mobile.”
Drummond, who currently represents House District 103, previously served as executive director of administration for former Mobile Mayor Sam Jones. Her campaign has emphasized economic development, gun violence prevention, and neighborhood revitalization.
The endorsement comes just weeks before Mobile voters head to the polls for the September 23 runoff election, where Drummond will face off against Spiro Cheriogotis. Political observers say Booker’s support could energize turnout among younger and progressive voters, while also reinforcing Drummond’s credentials as a proven leader.
“I am humbled to have Senator Booker’s endorsement,” Drummond said in a statement. “Like him, I believe in building safer communities, creating opportunity for all, and ensuring every voice is heard. This campaign is about moving Mobile forward together.”
Booker’s involvement highlights the growing importance of the Mobile mayoral race beyond city lines. With major investments on the horizon for the Port of Mobile, Airbus, and the region’s booming aerospace and shipping industries, the city’s next leader will play a critical role in shaping its future.
As the campaign enters its final stretch, Drummond is banking on her experience — and now a powerful national endorsement — to help secure victory.
