HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Huntsville City Council voted Thursday to approve the annexation of 572.48 acres in north Huntsville, clearing the way for future residential and commercial development.

The property, located north of Bob Wade Lane and bisected by Mt. Lebanon Road, was submitted for annexation by the Sam and Rosa Harris Family Farm LLC.

City officials say the land will undergo a master planning process to guide its development. More than 500 acres are proposed for Residence 2 or Residence 2-B zoning, with an additional 65 acres seeking Highway Business C-4 zoning.

The Huntsville Planning Commission is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the zoning requests at its Aug. 26 meeting. Pending approval, the requests will then return to the City Council for final consideration.

City leaders noted the annexation supports Huntsville’s growth strategy in the north corridor, particularly along the Northern Bypass, where new retail opportunities are expected to follow.
