COURTLAND, AL — In a move that reinforces North Alabama’s reputation as a powerhouse in the aerospace and defense industry, Lockheed Martin is set to complete an 88,000-square-foot assembly plant in Courtland dedicated to producing long-range ballistic missile defense interceptors.

The new facility represents a significant investment in the region’s growing defense sector and will bolster the Huntsville area’s standing as a critical hub for advanced military technology. Lockheed Martin officials say the plant will focus on assembling cutting-edge interceptor systems designed to protect against evolving missile threats worldwide.

“This expansion is not just about bricks and mortar — it’s about strengthening our national defense and supporting the highly skilled workforce here in North Alabama,” a company spokesperson said.

A Growing Defense Corridor

The Courtland plant is the latest in a string of major aerospace and defense projects anchored in the greater Huntsville area, home to Redstone Arsenal, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, and a dense network of military contractors. The expansion is expected to bring new high-paying jobs and further stimulate the regional economy, with opportunities in engineering, manufacturing, and logistics.

Local economic development leaders have hailed the project as proof of the area’s unique blend of technical expertise, infrastructure, and strategic location. “When global defense leaders like Lockheed Martin choose to expand here, it underscores what we already know — that North Alabama is second to none in delivering innovation for national security,” said one official with the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce.

About Courtland

Courtland is a small, racially diverse town of about 777 residents, with roughly 53% Black and 45% White population. The median age is around 42, reflecting a mature community. While the median household income is about $41,400, more than one-third of residents live below the poverty line — a reality that makes the arrival of new high-paying jobs especially impactful for local families.

Strategic Impact

The interceptors built at the Courtland facility will be part of the Missile Defense Agency’s long-range protection systems, intended to counter potential ballistic missile attacks. The expansion aligns with the Department of Defense’s push for enhanced readiness and advanced deterrence capabilities.

With construction nearing completion, Lockheed Martin is expected to ramp up operations later this year, adding another chapter to the region’s deep history of aerospace innovation.
