USPS Calls on Homeowners to Upgrade Mailboxes Amid Growing Package Volumes

SPEAKIN’ OUT NEWS

With more Americans receiving packages than ever before, USPS encourages residents to upgrade to secure, extra-large mailboxes. A simple improvement this National Mailbox Improvement Week can help protect your deliveries and keep mail flowing smoothly. (USPS photo)

The U.S. Postal Service is calling on customers across the country to take a moment and show some love to their mailboxes this week.

National Mailbox Improvement Week, observed from May 18–24, is a reminder to inspect, repair, and upgrade the humble mailbox—your first point of contact for birthday cards, bills, and official correspondence.

“Customer mailboxes are the first point of contact for receiving birthday cards, letters, and important documents,” said Doug Tulino, Acting Postmaster and CEO. “A well-maintained mailbox helps to ensure that every package and parcel makes it to its intended destination safely and efficiently.”

Is Your Mailbox Ready?

The USPS recommends residents check for the following issues:

  • Loose or broken hinges
  • Rust, peeling paint, or damage
  • Unstable or leaning posts
  • Faded or missing house numbers
  • Obstructed paths to the mailbox

Mailboxes that are damaged or difficult for mail carriers to access can delay deliveries and put your mail at risk. For official guidelines on mailbox regulations and post sizes, customers are encouraged to visit the USPS website.

Go Bigger for Better Package Protection

With online shopping on the rise, USPS also suggests upgrading to extra-large mailboxes. These spacious boxes—available at retailers like Walmart, Home Depot, and Lowe’s—measure approximately 14 inches wide, 12 inches tall at the center, and 17 inches deep, offering a better fit for small packages and helping reduce porch theft.

Mail Security Tips

In addition to upkeep, the Postal Service urges customers to take steps to protect their mail:

  • Retrieve mail promptly: Don’t leave letters or packages sitting in your box or on your porch for extended periods.
  • Report vandalism: If you see someone tampering with a mailbox, contact local law enforcement immediately.

Whether it’s a quick paint job or a full replacement, giving your mailbox a little attention this week can go a long way in keeping your mail secure and your deliveries on time.
