Six-year-old Brooklyn, a first grader at Pleasant Grove Elementary School, will never forget the moment her teacher turned her tears into a dream come true.

Brooklyn was heartbroken when she learned her mother couldn’t attend the school’s Sneaker Ball—a special event where students dress up and dance with family. That’s when her teacher, Emily Gilreath, stepped in. Only in her second year of teaching, Gilreath saw an opportunity to create a lifelong memory.

“I asked her mom if I could take Brooklyn to the ball,” Gilreath said. “She said yes, and I got to work.”

A fellow teacher donated a dress. Gilreath helped Brooklyn do her makeup, showed her how to apply lipstick, and recorded the preparation. She posted the video on TikTok, where it quickly went viral—earning over 600,000 views.

But the story didn’t stop there. Producers from The Jennifer Hudson Show reached out to invite Emily, Brooklyn, and Brooklyn’s mother Annie to Los Angeles. On April 15, the trio flew across the country for Brooklyn’s first plane ride and a once-in-a-lifetime appearance on national television.

Brooklyn got to see the Hollywood sign, tour Warner Brothers Studios, and even had her name on a dressing room door. During the show, Gilreath was honored with a $10,000 classroom grant from Paper Mate.

“This reminded me that every single action I take matters in the life of a child,” said Gilreath, who originally pursued Christian leadership before becoming a teacher.

Principal Staci Lewis said the act was no surprise: “Teaching is Emily’s calling. She loves each of her students and always goes the extra mile.”

Brooklyn now walks the halls with a new sparkle in her step—and a teacher she’ll never forget.
