Actress S. Epatha Merkerson delivers the keynote address at Talladega College’s 150th Commencement on May 4, 2025, where she announced a surprise $1 million donation to support the historically Black institution’s future.

TALLADEGA, Ala. — Award-winning actress S. Epatha Merkerson has donated $1 million to Talladega College, Alabama’s oldest private historically Black college, during its 150th commencement ceremony held on May 4, 2025.

Merkerson, best known for her longtime role as Lt. Anita Van Buren on Law & Order and currently starring in Chicago Med, served as the keynote speaker for the milestone graduation. The Emmy-winning actress was also honored by the college with an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in recognition of her artistic achievements and philanthropic spirit.

Although Merkerson has no formal ties to the college, her visit left a powerful impression.
“I have had a lot of luck in my career, and I came down here and met some wonderful people who embraced me immediately,” she said in an interview. “I felt at home, and I love what this college has done over 150 years. It’s important to give back.”

Rica Lewis-Payton, chair of Talladega’s Board of Trustees, praised the contribution as transformational.
“This generous donation will have a profound impact on Talladega College,” she told CBS 42. “It ensures that this institution remains a beacon of light in the community and continues to cultivate future leaders for generations to come. We are privileged to count Ms. Merkerson among the supporters who believe in our mission.”

Founded in 1867 by formerly enslaved men and the American Missionary Association, Talladega College is known for its commitment to academic excellence and cultural preservation. It houses the renowned Amistad Murals by artist Hale Woodruff and continues to serve as a pillar in the education of African American students.

Merkerson’s gift underscores her commitment to uplifting historically Black institutions and the students they serve.
