Washington, D.C. — During a powerful prime-time address, President Donald Trump honored two remarkable Americans whose lives reflect the best of the American spirit: Jeff Denard of Decatur, Alabama, and Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel, a 13-year-old cancer fighter from Texas with a dream of becoming a police officer.
Denard, a steelworker with Nucor Steel for nearly 30 years, has also served as a volunteer fire captain and, with his wife Nicole, has raised seven children while fostering more than 40 others at their youth home in Danville. “Jeff represents everything America is about—hard work, faith, and service,” said Trump.
DJ, who has been battling terminal brain and spine cancer since age six, has made it his mission to be sworn into as many law enforcement agencies as possible. To date, he has been honored by over 871 departments worldwide. During the address, Trump directed Secret Service Director Sean Curran to swear DJ in as the youngest-ever honorary U.S. Secret Service agent.
Alabama played a heartfelt role in DJ’s journey. In late 2024, the Birmingham Police Department led a statewide effort involving 33 law enforcement agencies—including ALEA and the FBI—to honor DJ with badges and resolutions. Governor Kay Ivey also recognized DJ’s courage and spirit, calling him “an inspiration to us all” and praising his resilience in the face of adversity.
“Devarjaye’s determination, despite everything he’s facing, reminds us of the power of hope and purpose,” Ivey said. “Alabama is proud to stand with him.”
DJ’s mission was inspired by the kindness of police officers during Hurricane Harvey, and his father, Theodis Daniel, says DJ is living every day like it’s his last. “He’s literally fighting for his life, but he’s doing it with joy and purpose.”
As applause echoed across the chamber, the stories of Jeff and DJ reminded the nation what it means to serve, to endure, and to inspire.
