Theatre Huntsville Presents ‘The Mountaintop’ at AAMU

Theatre Huntsville is thrilled to announce its production of “The Mountaintop,” which offers a fictional depiction of Martin Luther King Jr.’s last night on earth, will run May 10 – 19, 2024 at Alabama A&M University’s Johnson Little Theatre.

Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Katori Hall, and set in Memphis on the eve of King’s assassination, the powerful two-person drama imagines a fictional encounter between King and a mysterious hotel maid, Camae. The two engage in a poignant and thought-provoking dialogue that delves into King’s humanity, fears, and legacy.

Through Hall’s innovative blending of realism with elements of fantasy and magical realism, audiences are transported into a world where history and imagination intersect, prompting deep reflection on the past, present, and future.

“‘The Mountaintop’ means a lot to me as a professor,” says AAMU Assistant Professor of Performance Jill Balch-Coon, “When it opened on Broadway, the production started its press tour at the school where I was teaching, Brooklyn High School of the Arts. Director Kenny Leon, writer Katori Hall and actors Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett spoke to our students and the production company gave us tickets to see them perform on Broadway.”

AAMU’s Theatre Technical Director, Darwin Washington is the Lighting Designer and talented AAMU students are serving as stagehands, contributing their skills and dedication to ensuring the success of the performance. Byron Turner will direct.

“We’re honored to have Theatre Huntsville produce the play at Johnson Little Theatre and we appreciate the opportunity to have Alabama A&M students serving as technical support,” adds Balch-Coon. “Our technical director Darwin Washington is the Lighting Designer for the performance and is truly a magnificent artist.”
