On Sunday, February 25th, 2024, West Mastin Lake Baptist Church commemorated its annual Black History Program under the theme “Living In Crisis: Restoring Hope to the Black Family.” The event commenced with a heartfelt rendition of the song “We Shall Overcome” by Dr. Doris Hinton, the church’s first lady. Afterward, an inspiring “Black History Reflection” was delivered by Dr. Sprite Simpson, 3rd, an esteemed associate minister of WMLBC.
The distinguished guest speaker for the occasion was Mrs. Michelle Lanier Watkins, a prominent Huntsville City School Board member. Mrs. Watkins shared insightful perspectives on the city’s state, offering a poignant address titled “A Black Woman’s Perspective.” Adding to the ambiance, the Columbia High School Jazz Ensemble graced the gathering with soul-stirring performances of timeless negro spirituals, including “Closer Walk With Thee” and “Steady War No More.”
Closing the ceremony, Pastor Willie L. Hinton, Sr. delivered a powerful message titled “Living In a Crisis,” drawing inspiration from Revelation 2:4. The congregation was deeply moved by Pastor Hinton’s words of wisdom and encouragement. Following the program, attendees convened in the Fellowship Hall for a humble “Poor Man’s Meal,” fostering fellowship and camaraderie among all present.
