Joyful Traditions Blossom: Lakeside United Methodist Church’s 123rd Harvest Celebration echoes with laughter as children bring in the sheaves in a heartwarming pantomime.

November 12, 2023, marked a day of traditional observances in the annals of the history of Lakeside United Methodist Church. The Sunday worship service commemorated one-hundred-twenty-three Harvest Celebration observances in the church’s annual calendar. The first occasion, November 3, 1901, was begun as a day of thanksgiving for the productions of Mother Earth in the bountiful crops and a prosperous harvest of souls. This year’s theme, “Moving Forward by Offering Christ Everyday,” continues the church’s focus on the original design. Many of the traditions of that first Harvest are replicated year after year.

Dr. Clarence Sutton, Superintendent of Huntsville City Schools, delivered an inspiring and challenging message with Philippians 3: 13-14 Biblical reference. He skillfully addressed the theme as a minister and educator with dual concern for the soul of man and the souls of those in the community for whom he is dually responsible and has grave concern. He emphasized the importance of everyone in the community striving to prepare for our future by moving forward and becoming involved.

Also, highlighting the morning was the seventy-three years tradition of the Sheave Bearers, a pantomime by children, to the familiar “Bringing in the Sheaves” and the recognition of past sheave bearers in the audience. The day was filled with jubilation as the Lakeside United Methodist Church community joined to reflect on the rich one-hundred-twenty-three-year Harvest history.
