GRAMBLING, La. | Grambling State University followed suit of hiring HBCU head football coaches with NFL experience when former Oakland Raiders and Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson was named Friday the next leader of the Tigers’ program. Jackson comes to Grambling State after spending the past year as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Tennessee State University under former NFL star running back and now TSU head coach Eddie George. Jackson is replacing Broderick Fobbs who led the G-Men the last seven seasons.
Jackson, 56, has more than 30 years of coaching experience at both the collegiate and professional levels. He began his coaching career in 1987 at the University of the Pacific, his alma mater, and spent a majority of the next 13 years in the college ranks. He then moved to the professional ranks in 2001 and remained in the National Football League until 2019.
In addition to Pacific, he had stints at Cal State Fullerton, in the World League’s London Monarchs, and at Arizona State, California and Southern Cal, all on the offensive side of the ball.
Prior to the NFL head coaching positions with Oakland and Cleveland, he worked as an offensive assistant in the league with Washington (RBs., OC), Cincinnati (WRs), Atlanta (OC) and Baltimore (QBs).
“I want to thank President Gallot for his vision and passion for Grambling State University,” Jackson said. “I am honored to be working with him as with vast submission of this great institution to transcend barriers. I also want to thank Dr. Scott for the countless hours of discussions as we shared for a common desire to position our student-athletes for success and excellence on and off the field.”
Collegiately, Jackson played quarterback at Pacific after transferring from Glendale Community College. During his career at UOP, he amassed over 3,400 yards in total offense and 19 touchdowns in two seasons. Jackson also earned a letter in basketball as a senior.
Jackson earned a degree in Physical Education from Pacific in 1986.
