ONE WOMAN’S OPINION

Jackie Reed Columnist

Thanks to Speakin Out News and to our many dedicated readers. Time is passing by. It is hard to believe it is only three months until Christmas. I do not add numbers to my birthday age anymore because they add up way to fast. I have had a good life and even the bad times were good.

My grandson came home from Auburn this past weekend after being away at school for six weeks.  We sure do miss him. He is a senior this year and I sure hope when he graduates, he finds a job in Huntsville. His life is just beginning after graduation and will become very busy in the future.

COVID-OPTIONS
Parents are required to give consent before their school age children can be vaccinated at state run clinics.  The state Legislators complained about vaccination being given without parent’s consent and a new law was passed late in the summer requiring parent’s consent be given.

PLANNING DEPARTMENT
Who makes the big decisions on buildings and changes on ordinances that are taking place in Huntsville, Alabama?  I have gone to many planning department meetings when citizens are wanting to know what is being built in their area. I believe the developers many times have already met with planning and administration to make deals and decisions have already been made prior to the planning meetings.  There have been many ordinances changed in the past few years about the rights-of-way, setbacks, zoning, and alleys being closed in order to meet developers planning.  Sometimes I get upset with myself for getting involved with politics.

PARKING GARAGE
The parking garage in front of City Hall is coming down the 1st of October according to our city leaders and Administration.  This garage needs upkeep but does not need to be demolished.  This parking garage is needed for people accessing the Courthouse and the downtown area. They plan to build a new City Hall at the parking garage location. I have been fussing about this for a year or more. No one will tell us what the plan is for the property where the existing City Hall stands. Dale Strong has been begging Battle not to tear the garage down, but the city does not care.

GOVERNORS DRIVE – 14th STREET
Please go by the Post Office on Governors Drive and see the big buildings being built there. The city, Mayor, City Council and Planning department has changed so much the past few years.   Who has taken over?  The big moneys and big developers? I hope you all get the big city that you want so bad but it would be nice if you would take care of what we already have.

Love you all and have a blessed week.
