Thanks to Speakin Out News and to our many dedicated readers. Hope everyone had a great weekend as the weather was good and there were many events and football games being played. I hope your team won. Thanks to family and especially my son and daughter who are so good to me. I lost my car when I was in a wreck last year and broke my shoulder. But the “Tough Ole Bird”, as my son calls me, is back. I love his nickname for me. He knows I care about the people and will fight for them. I was raised in the country by my father that believed strongly in principles.
Thanks to the William Smothers who has been so good to me over the years. He has a beautiful family and beautiful grandchildren. Speakin Out News is the best paper in the city. The Times only brings up a few issues about the city but never anything the public has to say about the issues. Everything has changed so much in this country from the way things used to be.
COVID-19 BOOSTERS
The COVID-19 Boosters are coming but who will want to take them? The Biden administration is having to scale back its expectations as the science is still being worked out. The initial plan was to offer Pfizer or Moderna boosters starting Sept.20 but the Food and Drug Administration needs more evidence to judge them and wants its booster to be half the dose of the original s shots. The booster shots will contain an extra dose of the original vaccine, but Manufacturer’s still are studying experimental doses to make them a better match to the delta variant.
MOVING ELECTIONS
The public currently votes every 4 years but a move by the Legislature last spring rescheduled the 2024 municipal elections to 2025, thus adding an extra year to the existing terms. Gregory Cochran, executive director with the Alabama League of Municipalities said the change was made to get municipal elections off the same calendar year as the presidential elections. Seems having the voting for both of these elections in the same year overworked the poll workers and left very little time for repairing and replacing voter equipment between elections.
Birmingham and Mobile were already scheduled for municipal elections in 2024 so they are unaffected by the new law. Also unaffected by the new law are three other larger cities, Huntsville, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa. But cities like Madison and Athens which had municipal elections in 2020 will see the date moved to 2025.
Love you all and have a blessed week.
