The mother of a young Alabama boy shot to death while visiting Chicago over Labor Day weekend has launched a GoFundMe to “help us raise awareness and get justice for my baby.”
Mychal “MJ” Moultry Jr., a 4-year-old from Decatur, was shot Friday night while getting his hair braided at an apartment.
“My 4-year-old son was shot twice in his head. He was murdered while we were visiting Chicago for a family trip,’’ his mother, Angela Gregg, wrote in the Go FundMe. “MJ was sitting in a chair getting his hair done and became the victim of a drive by shooting. He lost his innocent life.”
Police said the shooting happened about 9 p.m. Friday in the 6500 block of South Ellis Avenue in Chica- go’s Woodlawn community. MJ was sitting in a barber chair in the apartment get- ting his hair braided when he was shot. He and his mother had gotten to Chicago earlier that day.
Gregg told the Chicago Tribune said she was not present when the shooting occurred at the apartment of a family friend, who was injured from shattered glass while braiding the child’s hair. The boy’s father, Mychal Moultry Sr., was near his son when shots were fired, but was not injured.
MJ was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead just before 5 p.m. Sunday after being removed from support.
Police said they recovered 27 spent shell casings from a .45 caliber handgun and a 5.7mm mini rifle. No arrests have been made.
Gregg told the Tribune that MJ, recently began preschool and was “so excited to go to big boy school.”
“He was so intelligent that they were getting ready to move him to kindergarten,” Gregg told the Tribune. “They said he was brilliant … He was able to read and write. He knew all his numbers. He knew his additions. He was just so advanced.”
“Please donate to help us raise awareness and get justice for my baby,’’ Gregg wrote in the GoFundMe. “Please, as his parents, we are begging the world for help. This what we need from all of you. Please!”
