ONE WOMAN’S OPINION

Jackie Reed Columnist

Thanks to Speakin Out News and to our many dedicated readers.  I hope you have had a great week and are keeping up with news and things going on around you.  Every day is a new day so please be careful.    Please pray the big storms coming thru will pass over Huntsville. My family from Tennessee called and said the tornadoes that hit 2 weeks ago were near their home.   The weather forecasters say that IDA in Louisiana is starting to look like a monster storm and landfall is expected in Louisiana. I am praying for everyone there.

COVID CASES
The State Health Officer, Dr. Harris said the state saw 5,571 cases of COVID-19 last weekend. The school age cases are up 700%.  They are saying that everyone should be vaccinated and Harris urges masks in schools.  Dr. Harris also said that between 88-89% hospitalized patients are unvaccinated. The hospitals are full and there are many critically ill people being held in the emergency departments as many rooms are being converted to ICU rooms. Alabama is struggling to keep schools open and parents and students would like things to be back to normal.  Please say prayers as we need some serious help thru these trying times.

WEST HUNTSVILLE
A $200 million development is under construction in West Huntsville that includes 800 homes.  Upland Park, located on Enterprise Way is at the entrance to Research Park and will cover 60 acres with senior residents, restaurants, retail, offices, entertainment and public green space.

CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS
It is amazing as to what you read about on the City Council agenda and the things going on in Huntsville. Last week there were 3 large farms on the agenda to be voted on that the city was renting. We do not have a way of knowing much about these properties as no one is given the opportunity to question their agenda items.

JOHNSON HIGH SCHOOL
My daughter was asking if I knew that the old Johnson High School is being torn down as she heard on the news. I was at a meeting at Johnson High School where they were discussing building houses on the school property. I was hoping something like John Hunt Park would be built there instead to host sporting events and where people could have community meetings in the school like at Grissom High.  My favorite and good friend Dr. James Dawson would not believe and would have let all these things happen.  He believed in EQUAL for all schools and I was so proud of him.  I do not believe Dr. Richard Showers would like the plans this council has voted on either.  Where are our leaders today and is there no Common Sense anymore?

My daily prayers are, “Thank you GOD for life, health, Faith, Family, friends and others”.

Love you all and have a blessed week.
