CITY ELECTION OVER
I was so proud of being in the election for Mayor for the 9th time. I started back in 1988, during Mayor Davis’s last year in office. I have been on the ballot for City Council 7 times against Bill Kling and ran one time for State Legislative. Congratulations to the candidates that ran for office and especially for the Mayor of Huntsville and the Mayor of Madison as they were both reelected. Mayor Battle swept the votes in Huntsville with 28,000 votes. Thanks to all who believed in me and I appreciate your votes.
I think the majority of the people would rather have me standing up for them and speaking out on the issues of our City government more than they want me in office. I will continue to be there to question our roads, streets, traffic, speeders and empty buildings. My campaign was all about helping our citizens in all neighborhoods and win or lose, I will continue to try to do so.
Many citizens do not care what officials do with City money, why big money developers are driving the direction our City is taking and the large debt it is creating. As long as the City is growing it makes some people happy. I am still after the planning department who makes these decisions and why the city council votes without allowing questions to be asked. We have always had work sessions on big deals and budget hearings with the public except this with Administration. Oh well, Jackie Reed will be keeping on.
HISTORY
I read an article in the Times about several people questioning if we should keep teaching history in schools. Please let history stay in the classrooms as many have sacrificed. Dr. Martin Luther King and Dr. James Dawson are two people I admire. Folks wake up and find something else to fuss about.
One of the main issues I have with the Huntsville School system is how the city bought up the school properties and helped their partners put businesses in the school buildings. As a result, school children ride the bus from daylight until dark. I was at the school board meetings when all this was taking place and many of the students wanted to stay in the schools in their own neighborhoods. Is education better with the new schools?
Now our leaders are starting in on the Housing Projects of which there should be more advertised public hearings by the Housing Authority. Most all houses have some level of radon in them so why the big fuss on the Housing project. We need to just remodel the buildings and make apartments for mix use instead using them for City development.
Love you all and have a blessed week.
