June 28, 2018 marked the ribbon-cutting for two millennial business women who made history becoming the first to open a Smoothies & Things Café in North Alabama. Kimberly Whitson and Leona Bostic, are co-owners of the restaurant located at 7830 Highway 72 West in the Publix Shopping Center Plaza in Madison. Smoothies & Things Café franchise chain was founded and launched by African American businessman Darian Clark. Ms. Whitson, a Birmingham native, said that she and Ms. Bostic used to dine at the restaurant when they both worked for the State of Alabama in Montgomery. The ladies have known each other 12 years and based on their experiences there, were motivated to purchase a franchise years later after they both had moved to Madison County.

Leona, who works fulltime as an auditor for the federal government said while they don’t expect success overnight, they are determined to learn and absorb as much knowledge as possible about running a business. Responsibilities are split equally according to Leona and they definitely plan to open other locations. Kim, who holds an MBA, stated, “business is not for the faint of heart and we appreciate the support from the North Alabama African American Chamber of Commerce”. The ladies invite everyone to try out the fresh pasta, great paninis and wraps, along with the city’s best smoothies.
