Huntsville is allocating up to $3 million toward Wellstone’s planned 16-bed mental health crisis facility.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The City of Huntsville is directing up to $3.12 million in opioid settlement funds toward expanding mental health treatment and strengthening substance abuse prevention across the community.

Announced October 22, 2026, the investment will benefit Wellstone, a regional behavioral health provider, and Not One More Alabama, a nonprofit focused on addiction prevention and family education.

Expanding Crisis Treatment

Wellstone will receive up to $3 million to support a planned 16-bed mental health crisis facility. Funding is capped at $1 million annually beginning in fiscal year 2028 and will support equipment, furnishings and professional staffing.

The organization served a record 17,702 people during its latest reporting year, approximately 3,500 more than the previous year.

More than 3,200 clients experienced substance use disorders, including 529 with opioid-related diagnoses.

Helping Families Recognize Warning Signs

Not One More Alabama will receive up to $120,000 over two years to expand its mobile Discovery Room, an interactive exhibit designed to help parents and caregivers recognize potential warning signs of teenage substance abuse.

The funding will support educational materials, staffing, and community outreach.

Established in memory of Jay Barton, the Discovery Room recreates a teenager’s bedroom to demonstrate possible indicators of drug use while educating families about fentanyl, counterfeit pills, and prescription medication misuse.

Together, the investments aim to improve access to crisis services while helping families recognize addiction risks earlier.

For Huntsville residents, the funding represents an opportunity to transform opioid settlement dollars into practical treatment, prevention and recovery resources.
