PONTIAC, Mich. — A 31-year-old Michigan woman faces an assault charge after authorities say she poured boiling water on a 15-year-old girl following a fight, leaving the teenager with severe burns.
Shanell Lakeisha Cohen was arrested Oct. 1 after an interview with detectives at the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Pontiac Substation. Deputies said she admitted pouring the water on the teenager.
According to investigators, Cohen and the girl initially fought during a large disturbance near Leonard Lane in Pontiac. After that confrontation ended, Cohen allegedly went inside her home, retrieved a pot of boiling water, and returned. Authorities said she poured the water on the teenager’s back while the girl was involved in another altercation.
Emergency responders took the teenager to McLaren Oakland Hospital before she was transferred to Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit. Deputies reported third-degree burns to her neck and most of her back. She remained hospitalized when KTVU published its Oct. 2 report.
Cohen was charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm, less than murder, and arraigned Oct. 1 in 50th District Court. Her bond was set at $75,000 cash or surety, with a 10% provision. A probable cause conference is scheduled for Oct. 13. The charge is an allegation, and Cohen has not been convicted in this case.
