Gov. Kay Ivey has approved Lawson State Community College’s Lineworker Training Program as Alabama’s first program authorized through the state’s Workforce Pell process.
The designation is intended to expand access to federal Pell Grant assistance for qualifying students enrolled in approved short-term, career-focused programs. Workforce Pell targets training connected to high-skill, high-wage, or in-demand occupations.
Lawson State’s 10-week program provides more than 400 hours of hands-on instruction. Training includes pole climbing, power-line installation, truck driving, and ladder safety. The college offers the program in partnership with Alabama Power to prepare participants for careers in the utility industry.
The approval does not mean every short-term program automatically qualifies for Workforce Pell funding. Alabama’s Department of Workforce, working with the Alabama Workforce Board, reviews applications using standards that include program length, employer demand, recognized credentials, completion and job-placement results, and operating history.
The Alabama Community College System helps member colleges assemble outcome data and prepare applications. Lawson State was the first college program to complete that joint process, and additional colleges are preparing submissions in other high-demand fields.
State officials said recent Lawson State cohorts attracted hundreds of applicants and that strong participants sometimes received employment offers before completing training. Those results helped demonstrate the program’s connection to available work.
Ivey launched Alabama’s Workforce Pell approval pathway during the summer. The state plans to publish a directory as more programs receive approval.
For prospective students, the announcement may make an intensive training route more affordable, but individual eligibility and financial-aid amounts can vary. Applicants should contact Lawson State’s financial-aid and workforce offices for current admission requirements, program dates, costs, and Pell eligibility before enrolling.
