ATLANTA — Alabama A&M alumnus Sylvester C. Johnson credits The Hill with building the foundation for a lifetime of leadership, service and achievement.
Raised in Rosebud, Alabama, a rural Wilcox County community of fewer than 70 residents, Johnson followed his sister, Lanie Young, to AAMU. He earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science in 1989, participated in Army ROTC, and performed with the Mighty Marching Maroon & White Band.
Commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1988, Johnson served in Germany and during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. His professional journey included leadership roles at Walmart, entrepreneurship, and 15 years with The Home Depot. Today, he serves as senior director of strategy and operations for Home Depot Equipment Services, supporting more than 550 associates across the United States and Canada.
Johnson remains committed to AAMU through mentoring, the Youth Motivational Task Force, and the Johnson Family Endowed STEM Scholarship.
As Bulldog Nation gathered in Atlanta for the MEAC/SWAC Challenge, Johnson’s message remained clear: honor those who opened doors by holding those doors open for others.
