OAKLAND, Calif. — Kiara Darvonne Bowling, a 31-year-old university student and pageant titleholder, is fighting for her life after a Toyota Camry reportedly driven by two young brothers struck her in East Oakland, leaving her with serious brain and facial injuries.
The Aug. 6 collision occurred about 9:15 a.m. near 35th and Mangels avenues as Bowling walked a friend’s emotional-support dog. KTVU reported that surveillance video showed the Camry sideswiping an oncoming vehicle before veering toward Bowling. Police said Bowling and both children were transported to hospitals.
News accounts agree that the younger brother was 4 but differ on whether the older child was 6 or 7. KTVU, citing a source close to the family, reported that the older boy found the keys in his father’s pocket while the parents slept. The older child reportedly suffered two broken legs; the younger sustained a concussion.
Bowling is receiving treatment at Highland Hospital for multiple brain injuries and facial fractures. Her family said she had begun responding to basic commands, although she faces extensive rehabilitation and possible additional surgeries. A GoFundMe created by her aunt seeks assistance with medical care, therapy, transportation and long-term recovery expenses.
Bowling is completing her final semester at California State University, East Bay, and recently finished an online Harvard Law School pre-law program. She was crowned Ms. Greater Bay Area at the California Regency International Pageant and was selected as Miss California Regency International 2026.
Her relatives said they hold no ill will toward the children. However, Bowling’s aunt, Karon Markham, urged parents to remain watchful to prevent similar tragedies. Oakland police said the parents are cooperating with the investigation.
