HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Residents interested in learning how Huntsville’s government operates—and how they can help shape the city’s future—can now apply for the fall 2026 Civic Engagement Academy.
The free eight-week program is administered by the City’s Office of Multicultural Affairs. It combines classroom instruction, interactive activities and direct conversations with municipal leaders and department representatives.
Established in 2022 by community leaders Rhonda and Frank Broyles, the academy has grown to more than 350 alumni. City officials report that 92% of previous participants said they were likely or very likely to remain involved in civic life after graduating.
“The Civic Engagement Academy helps residents move from awareness to action,” Multicultural Affairs Director Dr. Randy Barbour Jr. said. He added that graduates leave with a clearer understanding of local government, stronger community connections and greater confidence about participating in civic affairs.
Classes will meet Tuesdays from 6–8 p.m., beginning Sept. 15 and continuing through graduation on Nov. 3. Sessions will examine how Huntsville operates, grows, maintains infrastructure, provides community resources and responds to public-safety needs. Participants will also learn how City Hall functions and explore practical ways to become more involved.
Applicants must be at least 19 years old, live within Huntsville’s city limits and have a desire to increase their community involvement. The City describes eligible applicants as aspiring or established community influencers. Participants are expected to attend all eight sessions to graduate.
Applications must be submitted by Friday, Aug. 21, at 10 p.m.
