Historic $82 million expansion will bring 24/7 emergency care closer to North Huntsville and Hampton Cove
SPEAKIN’ OUT NEWS

HUNTSVILLE — Huntsville Hospital Health System has received state approval to build two freestanding emergency departments, marking a major investment in expanding emergency medical care as Huntsville’s population continues to grow.
The Alabama State Health Planning and Development Agency (SHPDA) announced that the Health Care Authority of the City of Huntsville has been awarded Certificates of Need for the two facilities. Each emergency department is expected to cost approximately $41 million, including the first year of operating expenses, for a combined investment of $82 million.
One facility will be built at 10121 Memorial Parkway NW in north Huntsville, while the second will be located at 6079 U.S. Highway 431 South in Hampton Cove near Bojangles and the Hampton Inn & Suites.
Hospital officials said both locations will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing emergency care for walk-in patients and ambulance arrivals. Each facility will include advanced diagnostic services, including MRI, CT scanning, laboratory testing, and medical imaging, allowing many patients to receive emergency treatment closer to home.
“No area of the state is growing more rapidly than the Huntsville community,” said Jeff Samz, president and CEO of Huntsville Hospital Health System. “Our hospital system has been the backbone of healthcare here for 130 years. We’re committed to doing whatever it takes to address current needs and to prepare for even more growth in the future.”
Samz also described the north Huntsville project as the largest healthcare investment ever made in that part of the city, saying the new facilities will improve emergency access while supporting continued economic development.
The north Huntsville emergency department will be built on approximately 7.75 acres south of the planned $240 million North Village Town Center development. Earlier this year, the Huntsville City Council approved zoning for the site.
City Urban and Economic Development Director Shane Davis said the campus will initially include an emergency department and imaging center, with additional medical services expected as the surrounding area develops.
Huntsville Hospital spokesperson Katie Coppens said construction is expected to begin in September, with both facilities scheduled to open in late 2027 or early 2028.
The projects are part of Huntsville Hospital’s broader expansion strategy, which also includes adding six emergency department beds at Madison Hospital. Hospital leaders say the new facilities will help reduce travel times, improve emergency access, and ensure healthcare services keep pace with one of Alabama’s fastest-growing regions.
