More Than Muscle: Study Suggests Physical Fitness Can Strengthen Your Spiritual Life

More churches are combining exercise, fellowship and Bible study, encouraging believers to view physical health as one way to honor God and grow spiritually.

For many Christians, faith and fitness seem to belong in separate worlds. Church happens on Sunday, while exercise takes place in the gym. But a growing conversation among pastors, fitness leaders and believers suggests the two may be more connected than many people realize.

The Bible repeatedly emphasizes loving God with every part of our lives—including our physical strength. In Luke 10:27, Jesus teaches believers to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind.”

Some churches are embracing that idea by combining fitness classes with Bible studies, prayer groups and fellowship. Supporters say physical exercise not only improves health but also encourages discipline, endurance and community—qualities that can strengthen spiritual growth.

The Apostle Paul also points to the connection between body and worship. In Romans 12:1, he urges believers to “offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.”

While physical fitness alone does not make someone spiritually mature, many Christian leaders believe caring for the body honors God because it is His creation. They argue that exercise, healthy habits and service can become acts of worship when done with the right motivation.

As more churches introduce faith-based fitness ministries, the message is becoming clear: spiritual growth is not only about what happens in a pew but also about how believers live, serve and care for the bodies God has given them.

For many Christians, the journey toward stronger faith may begin with taking the next step—both spiritually and physically.
