ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. — A Florida mother is facing a second-degree murder charge after authorities say her 2-year-old daughter died from injuries sustained during a violent assault inside a home in Alachua County.
According to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded Thursday night to reports of an unresponsive child at a residence. When first responders arrived, they found the toddler in critical condition and immediately arranged for her transport to a nearby hospital.
Investigators said a witness told deputies that 29-year-old Jessica Wilson and her daughter had been staying at the home for approximately two weeks. The witness reported being awakened by Wilson, who handed over the unresponsive child. The witness then began performing CPR while awaiting emergency personnel.
Medical staff later documented extensive injuries to the child, including skull fractures and bruising to her head, chest, and back. Despite intensive medical treatment, the toddler remained hospitalized for three days before succumbing to her injuries.
According to investigators, Wilson admitted during questioning that she struck the child with a belt, punched her, and stomped on her back. Authorities said she acknowledged that her actions went too far and told investigators she became angry because the child was not listening.
The case has shocked the local community and sparked renewed concerns about child abuse and child safety.
Wilson was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. She was booked into the Alachua County Jail, where she is being held without bond pending further court proceedings.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
