MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Alabama law enforcement officials announced Monday that a statewide enforcement operation led to the seizure of approximately 123,000 doses of illegal kratom products, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat the sale of prohibited substances.
Authorities said the operation targeted retailers and distributors suspected of violating Alabama law by selling kratom products. Investigators conducted inspections and enforcement actions in multiple communities across the state as part of a coordinated effort to remove illegal products from the marketplace.
Kratom is a plant-derived substance native to Southeast Asia that has gained popularity in recent years. While some advocates claim it can help with pain management and opioid withdrawal symptoms, Alabama law classifies kratom as a controlled substance due to concerns about safety, misuse, and potential health risks.
Kratom is commonly sold as powders, capsules, tablets, liquid extracts, teas, and dried leaves. The substance contains compounds that can affect the brain in ways similar to stimulants at low doses and opioids at higher doses. Health officials warn that kratom use may cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, sweating, constipation, and drowsiness. Long-term or heavy use has also been linked to dependence, withdrawal symptoms, anxiety, irritability, insomnia, seizures, and, in rare cases, liver damage.
Authorities have not released information regarding arrests, specific business locations, or the estimated value of the products seized. However, officials described the operation as one of the largest recent efforts aimed at removing illegal kratom from Alabama communities.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional enforcement actions could follow.
