MOBILE, Ala. — USA Health has announced that labor and delivery services at Providence Hospital in west Mobile will officially end on June 30, marking the close of a chapter that spans generations of births in the Mobile area.
The health system previously indicated that the closure would coincide with the shutdown of Mobile OB-GYN, a private medical practice that operated at Providence Hospital. Officials have now confirmed that June 30 will be the final day labor and delivery services will be available at the facility.
Beginning July 1, all USA Health labor and delivery services will be consolidated at USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital in Midtown Mobile. Hospital officials say the facility has expanded its women’s health division to accommodate patients transitioning from Providence and Mobile OB-GYN.
Providence Hospital has deep roots in Mobile’s history. Founded by Catholic leaders in the 1850s, the hospital served generations of families before relocating from Midtown to west Mobile in the 1980s. The facility became part of the Ascension health care system in 1999 before being acquired by USA Health in late 2023.
USA Health officials acknowledged the emotional impact of the decision on the community.
“We do not take this change lightly,” the health system said in a statement. “Providence is where generations of Mobile families welcomed their children into the world.”
Other hospitals in the Mobile area, including Infirmary Health and Springhill Medical Center, will continue offering labor and delivery services.
USA Health says the transition is intended to streamline care while ensuring expectant mothers continue receiving comprehensive obstetric services.
