Parents and caregivers are being urged to check their homes after Target announced a nationwide recall of certain Up & Up baby wipes due to possible bacterial contamination that could pose serious health risks to infants and young children.

According to a June 5 notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the recall affects Up & Up Fragrance-Free Baby Wipes and Up & Up Fresh Cucumber Scented .

Baby Wipes. The products were pulled from store shelves after customer complaints and FDA testing detected traces of bacteria known as Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioi.

Target and manufacturer Sapro Temizlik Urunleri received reports from consumers alleging skin irritation, eye irritation, infections, and product discoloration following use of the wipes.

The FDA warned that exposure to the bacteria could lead to serious and potentially life-threatening infections, particularly among newborns, infants, young children, and people with weakened immune systems.

“Use of products contaminated with Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioi may result in serious and life-threatening infections,” the agency stated.

Health experts caution that in severe cases, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream and contribute to sepsis or pneumonia. Sepsis is a dangerous immune response to infection that can rapidly become life-threatening. Early warning signs include fever, chills, confusion, unusual sleepiness, shortness of breath, and severe discomfort.

Parents should also watch for symptoms of pneumonia, including persistent cough, fever, chest pain, difficulty breathing, and excessive sweating. In infants and young children, warning signs may include rapid breathing, poor feeding, vomiting, grunting, bluish lips or skin, and unusual lethargy.

Consumers who purchased the recalled wipes should stop using them immediately and follow Target’s instructions regarding refunds or disposal.

The FDA continues to monitor the situation and encourages anyone experiencing adverse reactions after using the products to seek medical attention and report symptoms to healthcare providers.

Target officials said the recall was issued out of an abundance of caution to protect customers and their families.
