HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Huntsville is turning Earth Month into a citywide movement, calling on residents to step outside, give back, and take pride in keeping their communities clean and beautiful.
Throughout April, Operation Green Team is leading a series of hands-on events designed to inspire environmental awareness and community connection. What began in 1970 as a small environmental teach-in has grown into a global effort — and Huntsville is stepping up in a big way.
“Whether you join a cleanup, visit Hays Nature Preserve or come grab some plants at our free giveaway, every small step helps keep our city clean, vibrant and beautiful,” said Niki Sothers, manager of the Green Team.
Residents have several opportunities to get involved:
April 10 – Spring Plant & Cleanup Supply Giveaway at John Hunt Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (while supplies last).
April 11 – District 1 Community Cleanup Day at Richard Showers Jr. Recreation Center from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
April 18 – Earth Day at Hays Nature Preserve from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring exhibits, demonstrations, and family activities.
April 20 – Deadline to submit nominations for the Huntsville Beautification Awards.
April 22 – Earth Day Cleanup at Bud Cramer Park from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
City leaders say the effort reflects a growing responsibility as Huntsville expands.
“As our city grows, so does our responsibility to protect the natural beauty that makes Huntsville special,” said Mayor Tommy Battle.
From families to neighborhood groups, Earth Month is more than a celebration — it’s a call to action for a cleaner, stronger Huntsville.
