Johnathan Boley, the Walker County child found deceased following an extensive search, whose death remains under investigation by local authorities.

WALKER COUNTY, Ala. — Authorities in Walker County say a child found dead following an extensive search showed no signs of trauma or assault, though the cause of death remains unknown as investigators continue their work.

Walker County Sheriff Nick Smith said Johnathan Boley was located Friday afternoon, approximately two miles from his home off Highway 195. His body was found partially submerged in a pond, with the family’s black Labrador retriever, Buck, discovered alive and staying near him.

“This is a heartbreaking outcome for everyone involved,” Smith said, adding that investigators have not yet determined what led to the child’s death.

An autopsy has been conducted, but officials say results are pending and further testing may be required to establish an official cause. Law enforcement emphasized that there were no immediate indicators of foul play based on initial findings.

During the search effort, Johnathan’s father, Jameson Boley, was arrested on charges of chemical endangerment and unlawful manufacturing of a destructive device. Sheriff Smith confirmed that those charges are not related to the child’s death.

Authorities stressed that the arrest stemmed from evidence discovered during the search and investigation process, not from circumstances surrounding Johnathan’s passing.

Jameson Boley is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

The case has drawn significant attention across Walker County, with community members expressing grief, concern, and a desire for clarity as the investigation unfolds. Sheriff Smith said the department is committed to conducting a thorough and transparent review of all evidence.

“Our focus remains on determining exactly what happened and ensuring that every question is answered,” Smith said.

Officials asked the public to allow investigators time to complete their work and urged residents to keep the family in their thoughts during what they described as an unimaginably difficult time.

The Walker County Sheriff’s Office said updates will be released as more information becomes available.
